Maa Sita Temple Foundation Ceremony in Sitamarhi: A Historic Step for Bihar’s Spiritual and Economic Future
On August 8, 2025, the sacred town of Sitamarhi, Bihar will host an important event – Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will lay the foundation stone for the Maa Sita Temple at Punaura Dham, stated to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita. With the total project cost estimated at Rs 882.87 crore, this project seeks to put Punaura Dham on the global pilgrimage map, just as the Shri Ram Temple in Ayodhya changed the region of Ayodhya. This grand event is taking place on the same day as the announcement of the Sitamarhi-Delhi Amrit Bharat Train, funded and approved by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, showing the significance of this occasion for Bihar’s cultural legacy, religious tourism and economy. Furthermore, as Bihar heads to the polls, an occasion like this is even more profound and inspiring, generating excitement across the Mithilanchal region and nationally.
A Grand Vision for Punaura Dham
The Maa Sita Temple, also referred to as the Maa Janaki Temple, will be a cornerstone of spiritual and cultural pride for Bihar. The temple complex will cover 67 acres with the tallest sanctum, which measures 151-feet tall, built by prominent architect Chandrakant Sompura, who built the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The development is set to cost Rs 882.87 crores with Rs 137 crores reserved for temple funding, Rs 728 crores for tourism development funding, and Rs 16.62 crore for upkeep funding to be completed in 10 years. The complex will also contain Sita gardens and Luv-Kush gardens, exhibition center, cafeteria, children’s play area, and parking spaces to accommodate pilgrims with varied needs. The materials include Makrana stone, and earth from 21 pilgrimage spots, which hold religious significance. The first celebration will be a Deepotsav with 51,000 dimmers, picture this!
The intention of the project is to develop Punaura Dham as a global pilgrimage destination that will connect Hop to Ayodhya through the Ram-Janaki route, under a scheme of the central government to build infrastructures to facilitate Indian nationals to visit the Nepal borders.
The Bihar government headed by Nitish Kumar has taken the project seriously, and the forming of a trust for the project will ensure that it is carried out quickly, with 36 months given for completion. The temple design incorporates historical and mythological narratives reflecting Sita, and as Bhumiputri, who “came out of the earth” at the time of King Janak plowing according to Hindu texts.
Political and Cultural Significance
While the expectation is that the ceremony will be religious in nature, it will actually be deeply political in character as Bihar prepares for Assembly elections in the October or November 2025 timeframe. With 131 members, the NDA (BJP: 80, JD(U): 45, HAM(S): 4 and two Independents) will ultimately face a serious TEST FROM the opposition playing on namal, modern and global issues in the form of the INDIA Bloc having 111 members (RJD: 77, Congress: 19, CPI(ML): 11, CPI(M): 2, CPI: 2). Union Ministers Giriraj Singh and Chirag Paswan have already referred to this event as “historic, a fullfilment of a long held hope for the people of Bihar.” Singh said it was “symbolically a tight slap” on those who were otherwise nonebelievers about the existence of Lord Ram, intentionally referring to their political opponents like Congress. Singh referencing the local strength of the BJP said their effort was “a fullfulment of a long held hope” by the residents of Mithila culturally and judging by the overwhelming responses they received as a result witnessed at the ceremony. The NDA is culturally and politically consolidating the fact that in a nation which is non-cohesively called connected, alongside Prime Minister Modi’s dream of seeing India developed.
The implication of the inviting of like minded individuals and achievers; tradition as expressed through their collective consumption of the invites reflect what will be a dedication ceremony attracting over more than one lakh people who are culturally aligned.
In conjunction with the temple’s foundation, the Sitamarhi-Delhi Amrit Bharat Train, which is being inaugurated, will enhance access for pilgrims. This should boost religious tourism and provide an economic lift to local communities. This simultaneous announcement represents a clever combination of spirituality and the infrastructure to support it, benefiting both voters and devotees.
Community and Spiritual Impact
For the residents of Sitamarhi and nearby Mithila, the Maa Sita Temple – which represents overdue recognition of their sacred history – is a relief. The Punaura Dham site has been neglected for many years, unlike the now-resolved, but previously contentious Ayodhya site. The temple development and accompanying tourism will lead to jobs and improved connectivity, and instill pride in the local communities. BJP supporters began mobilizing communities, distributing akshat (sacred rice), and chanting “Jai-Jai Sitaram, Chalu Punauradham” to gain support and produce a lively, inclusive celebration..

The spiritual aspect of this event is significant. Bihar State Religious Trust Board Chairman Ranveer Nandan was filled with tears of joy as he expressed this moment was “emotional” for many devotees. Mahant Kamal Kishor Das of Punaura Dham referred to it as a “happy moment,” which describes the expression of hope of many devotees to have a temple that honors Lady Sita. With the upcoming Deepotsav, attractions like a museum, would firmly establish Punaura Dham as the “Ayodhya of Bihar.”
Security and Preparations
With a huge population of devotees expected, the local administration in Sitamarhi is making every attempt to ensure the event is smoothly coordinated. District Magistrate Richie Pandey said, “dignity, discipline, and security in full.” The DGP Kumar, the organization’s traffic management coordinator to try to manage the huge influx of devotees. Not only is there participation of religious saints from the Hindu religion, they will also have the presence of central and state ministers and local leadership which reflects the importance and magnitude of this event, thereby establishing a historic moment for the state of Bihar.
The Maa Sita Temple project is an example of Bihar’s effort to recover its culture and faith while also driving economic prosperity. The foundation stone will be laid by Amit Shah and Nitish Kumar on August 8, 2025, a landmark day, a transformative day for Sitamarhi—where our past will now become a pilgrimage route for the whole world! Together with Amrit Bharat Train (Sitamarhi to Delhi), what they have begun will offer a story of faith, connection to culture, and development for Bihar’s glittering future to unfold. For the devotees and residents this is just the beginning of a new enlightened era for the legacy of Maa Sita to shine brightly long into the future with the potential to awaken countless generations to come.
